Stroll With The Stars, at Anticipation in Montreal

Stu Segal
We got such positive feedback from "Stroll With The Stars" last year, that we're doing it again at Anticipation in Montreal.

For anyone that doesn't know. . . the idea is a leisurely morning stroll, with some of our favorite authors, artists, editors and publishers strolling along.  And it's a stroll (not a heart-pounding aerobic exercise), so hopefully everyone who wants to can participate.  A leisurely mile, out in the fresh air, with interesting folks.  Someone described it as a "strolling kaffeeklatsche", and someone else likened it to the peripatetic schools of the Greek philosophers.  Anyway, we had a great time (see Denvention Strolls), with 40-50 fans strolling along with us each day.

Montreal will be even better.  It's a city of interesting architecture, diverse culture, and old world charm.  Rashmika and I were there last June for a few days and, coincidentally, we took some early morning walks around the city  -  my impression of Montreal is that, though different than New York or London, it's equally diverse and interesting.  And did I mention, it's not flat (which makes the planning a bit more challenging, since we are committed to keep the exercise at a level that's comfortable for everyone); but it's also not 5,000 feet above sea level like Denver, which will make walking much easier on all us sea-level folks.

Last year we were joined by Lou Anders, David Brin, Paul Cornell, Ellen Datlow, Joe & Gay Haldeman, Mary Robinette Kowal, Jay Lake, John Picacio, Scott Edelman, Lawrence M. Schoen, Stephen H. Segal, and Frank Wu for the Strolls, and we're hoping to get all them, and more, for Anticipation.

So look for updates, pack your walking shoes, and be prepared for Anticipation, which is shaping up to be the best Worldcon ever!

Might I suggest you make it a very early morning stroll, as in around 7 AM, or else a late evening stroll, after 10 PM? Because Montreal heat in August is generally really horrible, not to mention the high smog levels (not as bad as in Toronto, I'm told, but even though I've lived in Montreal for almost 13 years now, my San-Francisco-raised lungs are still stunned into submission every summer here!).

The time is of course an issue - too early and no one will come, too late and it may be too warm and also conflict with Programming. So we're working on timing and routes as we speak (er, write). Thank you for the suggestion.

It sounds awesome. I will totally hate missing it when I sleep until noon.

In all seriousness, glad it was such a success, and that there will be a repeat. Good luck!

Maybe we'll have to come up with . . . well, what's the opposite of "early bird" . . . to accommodate you.

Count me in! In fact, maybe since you're getting a jump on it for 2009, I won't have as many conflicts as I did at Denvention and I can stroll more days with you.

Thank you. And, BTW, is there a Klingonese translation for Stroll With The Stars? Or is "srtolling" a wholly un-Klingon concept?

I'll have to get back to you on this. Certainly we have words for "walk" and "run" but while a Klingon could theoretically stroll, saunter, meander, and strut, I don't believe the vocabulary for such variations is currently known.

Count me in. I was sorry I missed the last one - some of my favorite people walking!

(I did one of these at a CactusCon once - only then it was called "Getting Lost With Hal Clement in Phoenix".)

I am trying to visit Montreal for a weekend so that I can scamper along a few potential routes (alas, family and friend obligations have no left any weekends free so far).

While it will probably be cold and slippery compared with a summertime stroll, I would to know if you have any routes planned out yet? (just in case I do manage to get an upcoming weekend free).

Thanks

I only made it to one at Denver. It was a lot of fun. As I recall, there was a Klingonese scholar strolling that day.

Yes, Dr. Lawrence M. Schoen was with us that day, and he has confirmed he'll be joining us at Anticipation.
